GEORGE REEB
George Reeb, of German descent, was born in Alsace Lorraine on May 20, 1831. He came overland to California from Ontario, Canada and established a butcher shop in Hornitos in 1852 called the Hornitos Market. He also worked mining claims and bought mining property. On March 19, 1863, he married Rosina Hunziker in Hornitos. Reeb owned 313 acres and farmed over a thousand produceing barley wheat, hay, and lumber. He also engaged in land speculation. He was elected and served several years as Town Trustee of Hornitos, the only incorporated town in Mariposa County.
Reeb was a Republican member of the Odd Fellow Loadge, and with his family members of the Crystal Band of Hope. Along with his butcher wagon runs, he established a branch butcher shop in neighboting Mt. Bullion in 1902. Between 1908 and 1909, George Reeb was placed in the guardianship of his son, George M. Reeb of Hornitos. He died in Stockton, June 3, 1913, and was buried at Hornitos. (Source: Social Archive of Virginia University)

136 YEARS OLD!
*Up for sale on is a very rare "1877 MEAT BUTCHER & CALIFORNIA GOLD MINERS HORSE & BUGGY WAGON DIARY ACCOUNT BOOK HORNITOS CALIFORNIA 2 BOOKS 200+ ENTRIES." The horse and buggy wagon diary account books are from George Reeb, a German butcher who established the Hornitos Market butchers shop in Hornitos, California just a few years after the 1849ers California gold rush. In fact, Mr. Reeb was so successful that he expanded his business ventures into gold mining having worked a variety of mining claims and owning a gold mining property of his own. The 136 year old 1877 & 1878 MEAT BUTCHER & CALIFORNIA GOLD MINERS HORSE BUGGY WAGON DIARY ACCOUNT BOOKS are in good condition for their age. The books have a leather cover which is very worn and torn as seen in the photos, the interior pages are intact with some lightly soiled pages, creases etc. The 1878 book back side cover and pages are torn and reduced in size as seen in photo. The hand written entries are not impacted as it appears that the majority if not all of the entires are above the edge of the pages. The two HORSE & BUGGY WAGON DIARY ACCOUNT BOOKS include daily entires for a number of accounts that received daily deliveries of meat and other items by the Hornitos Butchers wagon. Wow! Folks from Hornitos California were certainly big meat eaters. The big winner appears to be beef as indicated by the repeated entry of BF or RF it appears at times when he was too lazy to make the final loop in the bottom of the b in beef. Also, pork and other types of meat are listed such as hogs head, shin of beef, and other terms or codes for meat I am not familiar with such as Sash, ST, R perhaps is for rabbit maybe. Ooops! Lets not forget my favorite, BALONEY which was spelled in the book entry as BELONE. I learned a fascinating fact about the hard working legendary blacksmiths that we have read about in history books. They love to eat meat and they love BEEF! A few hand written accounts indicate that some of the blacksmiths had credit accounts with Hornitos Butcher Market. Just a stroke of imagination since we are talking about 1877 when the true meaning of TRADE meant something. A blacksmith works with all types of metal and iron and it is likely that the blacksmith was a very important account that ensuredthat the butchers knives were razor sharp to cut those slabs of meat he was selling. A likely scenario is the blacksmith traded his services in exchange for deliveries of meat. Now where's the BEEF? Each hand written entry includes the name of the person who received meat deliveries, the date of delivery, the type of meat, and the cost. Other entries seem to included which folks were on credit or had paid their accounts up in full. The name Frank Reebs is also listed in faded pencil. Mr. Reeb, whose name is signed on the front of each book entrusted the diary account book to the safe care of a fellow named Frank Laferty whose name is also written on the cover of each book. The historical "1877 MEAT BUTCHER & CALIFORNIA GOLD MINERS HORSE & BUGGY WAGON DIARY ACCOUNT BOOK" is very rare and would make a fine addition to any collection. A recent web search has indicated that other Meat Butcher Wagon Diary Account Books from George Reeb are currently apart of the rare California State Libraries collection.
