A few wonderful illustrations of telescopes and the like. Original blue wraps, show some wear. Internally, some creasing and wear as well but mostly neat and clean. Scarce.

\"Sir William Henry Mahoney Christie,KCB,FRS(1 October 1845 – 22 January 1922) was a Britishastronomer.[1]

He was born in Woolwich, London, the son ofSamuel Hunter Christieand educated atKing\'s College SchoolandTrinity College, Cambridge. He wasfourth wranglerin 1868 and elected a fellow of Trinity in 1869.

Having been Chief Assistant at theRoyal Observatory at Greenwichfrom 1870 to 1881, he was appointed to replaceGeorge AiryasAstronomer Royalin 1881 and remained in office until 1910. He received the degreeD.Sc.(honoris causa)from theUniversity of Oxfordin June 1902,[3]and was created a Knight Commander of theOrder of the Bath(KCB) in 1904. He was elected aFellow of the Royal Societyin June, 1881.He was president of theRoyal Astronomical Societyfrom 1888 to 1890.

The first Astronomer Royal to retire at 65 (all previous incumbents bar Airy andJohn Pondhad died in office;John Pondhad been forced by poor health to resign in 1835, while Airy retired aged 81), Christie died and was buried at sea nearGibraltarin 1922. He had married in 1881 Mary Violette, daughter ofSir Alfred Hickman.\" -wikipedia
