1879 Large Original Charcoal By Rosa Bonheur :
1879 LARGE ORIGINAL CHARCOAL BY ROSA BONHEUR
" Return From The Harvest ". Original charcoal with white pastel highlights: By Rosa Bonheur: image size ( in mat ): approx 27 x 13 1/4 inches ( approx 69 x 34cm ): signed with initials R.B. and dated lower left 1879: inscribed verso " Rosa Bonheur - from collection of T.E.Hanley ": also inscribed with ink notation discussing the work ( see my photo close up ): framed: frame size: 40 x 28 inches ( 100 x 71cm ).Provenance: Collection Edward & Tullah Hanley ( The Hanley Collection contained many important works including oils by Degas & Renoir. The large collection gained national notoriety on the death of Edward Hanley when his flamboyant wife, Tulla, a former exotic dancer, sold the collection ).This work is a reverse drawing of an oil painting about the same size by Rosa Bonheur titled " Return From The Harvest ". The work was drawn in reverse because it was created as a model on which to base an engraving for limited edition images printed on paper ( which would reverse the image again on printing ), Rosa Bonheur collaborated in the publication of several of her most famous paintings such as "The Horse Fair ". It's likely that much of the rendering is by Bonheur, with some work by a studio assistant. An unusual and significant addition to any Bonheur collection, the date of 1879 is important because it gives a time frame for the oil of the same subject, which is undated and remains in a private, non museum, collection. According to Tulla Hanley's note verso, the Rosa Bonheur expert and author on Bonheur, Annie-Paule Quinsac examined the work and also concluded that the work is a drawing made for an etching done after Bohneur painted the oil.NOTE: The sheet has some toning from light exposure: also a faint vertical toning line down the center from the old backing: a restored tear in the grass below the ox in the front, extending about 2 1/2 inches into the image: damage to the sheet all around the outer edges but nowhere near the actual image:: Work has new archival hinges and new archival barrier backing. The work is framed in a fine custom brown toned hardwood frame with inner gold leafing: Glass has been replaced with new museum grade UV protective plexiglas/This work is fully Please click on the link below to
