Synopticon : an exposition of the common matter of the Synoptic Gospels / by W. G. Rushbrooke. London: Macmillan & Co., 1880.
An interesting large folio New Testament in Greek, namely Mark, with parallels from Matthew and Luke, compiled by W. G. (William George) Rushbrooke, 1849-1926. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke are referred to as the Synoptic Gospels because they include many of the same stories, often in a similar sequence and in similar wording. They stand in contrast to John, whose content is comparatively distinct. The term synoptic (Latin: synopticus; Greek: συνοπτικός, / synoptikós) comes via Latin from the Greek σύνοψις, synopsis, i.e. \"(a) seeing all together, synopsis\"; the sense of the word in English, the one specifically applied to these three gospels, of \"giving an account of the events from the same point of view or under the same general aspect\" is a modern one.
From the introduction: `I. The common matter of the three Synoptists, being (for the first time in the history of Biblical criticism [with note on H. van Voorst\'s Dutch work of 1855-56]) made clearly prominent and separable from all context, affords the reader an opportunity of considering its language, style and contents, and of judging how far it may be taken by itself out of its triple framework and yet remain an intelligible picture. Hence the reader has altogether new facilities for discussing the probability or improbability of the supposition that this Triple Tradition is the nearest approximation we possess to some Original Greek Tradition whence our three Synoptic Gospels have been directly or indirectly derived. St. Mark\'s version, which stands in the left-hand column, apart from other considerations, seemed best fitted by its brevity to be adopted as the standard. It has therefore been printed at full length without deviation from its order; those parts alone of St. Matthew and St. Luke being inserted which are parallel to the narrative of St. Mark. The text is that of the Fourth Edition of Tischendorf\'s Synopsis Evangelica (Leipzig, 1878), corrected in all the more important variations of reading by the text of Westcott and Hort\' [as supplied by Hort prior to publication in 1881]. Complete; xiv p., Greek text on [1], 1-127, 127A, 128-133, [7], 134-239, [2] leaves printed on recto in red and black. Intricate typography required a special font of Greek type, just enough to set each of the 7 parts (6 of text + appendix) from which a pair of stereotype plates was cast. By chiselling out what did not apply, text common to the gospels was printed in red and variant text in black. Folio, bound in original blue cloth with gilt titling, as shown. Lightly worn, with some minor staining along the right edge of the upper board; hinges intact and leaves are in great shape with light wear, a signatuire on the front EP the only major mark. Measures 14.5\" x 10.75\". Good luck!
