You are offerding on a BEAUTIFUL, RARE, AND EARLY(believe 1875 to 1885 era) "good for" style trade token which has "THE J.M. BRUNSWICK & BALKE CO'S" PICTORIALCHECK actually is "GOOD FOR 5c IN TRADE" used by a SALOON KEEPER / HOTEL SALOON / LIVERY & HOTEL business run by proprietor "J. PRESTON", which at one time was located in old downtown SHELL ROCK, IOWA and LANESBOROUGH, MINNESOTA and LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN. (documented merchant was in 3 towns)

This is a gorgeous early J.M. Brunswick & Balke billiard reversetoken.This token is listed on the find tokencatalog website, and this merchant seems to have operated in the 1875-1880 timeframe in 3 towns as follows:

1) Shell Rock Iowa: A small town population 1296 today, located in Butler County. Julius Preston is listed in 1880 directories as Saloon Keeper in Shell Rock.

2) Lanesborough, Minnesota: A small town, pop 750 today, located in Fillmore Co. Old directory data shows JH Preston ran a Livery / Hotel business in 1875.

3) La Crosse, Wisconsin: Located in La Crosse County Wi, and census data shows that Julius Preston ran a Hotel and Livery business

This is a token I know very little about. I do not own any exonumia books from above mentioned states. Came out of a small collection of trade tokens from this region. Believe this is RARE and EARLY.

This is a nice old token..This appears to be an old style token...note that examples shown on the tokencatalog website are all HOLED and cancelled...this is a beautiful complete token !!

Trade token is brass, round, about 25mm in diameter, and it displays very nicely.(please see pictures in gallery) Token has not been cleaned in any way.
