All sell !ITEM: You are offerding on an antique and original set of two 1876 Victorian era anti-alcohol Temperance movement pledge cards and an 1881 Swan Gin advertising trade card.Distributed by the National Temperance Society in New York, these pre-prohibition era pledge cards read, \"I ________ solemnly promise to abstain from the use of all INTOXICATING LIQUORS as a beverage, including Wine, Cider, and Malt Liquors. Witness: _____________\" and \"I hereby promise, by the help of God, to abstain from the use of all intoxicating liquors, including wine, beer and cider, as a beverage.\" Framed by red, white and blue ribbons and garlands of blue flowers, the words TOUCH NOT. TASTE NOTE. HANDLE NOT. serve as an additional reminder of what it is one is pledging against. The organized temperance movement, which pre-dates AA by over 50 years, was instrumental in the eventual passage of prohibition, and also stood as an early example of a female-led social reform.Alternatively, the Swan Gin trade card is all for the consumption of intoxicating liquors. Dating to 1881 and showing a cherub riding a keg of gin being pulled by a swan across the Atlantic from Holland to the U.S., the reverse reads, \"We have always on hand a full supply of SWAN GIN in BOND, in 1/2 Pipes, Quarters & Eighths, for which we respectfully solicit orders; H.W. Campbell & Co., N.Y.\"Pledge cards measure 2 3/4\" x 4 1/2\"
