1880's Victorian Men's Brown Felt Top Hat With Brown Ribbon Jordan Marsh Boston:
I have a great deal of experience shipping fragile historic items such as antique hats. Please offer with confidence.Be sure to check out my other listings this week as I have another turn-of-the-century men's hat as well as phonograph-related items.
For your consideration is a beautiful antique later 1800's -probably 1880's, maybe a little earlier- Victorian men's top hat in a rarely encountered light brown felt with brown grosgrain ribbon. The hat displays wonderfully for its age and shows only minor wear. There is slight creasing at top along with a handful of light marks on the wool. Under the brim there are a few shallow moth digs, hardly noticeable. The left side of the brim has a 2 inch crease which seems to have broken the felt however the area is tight and shows more as a well-defined crease then a break. The grosgrain ribbon and brim edging feature light wear and minor staining.
The two inch thick leather sweatband is partially supple, with the brow-end most stiff and showing separation from the felt. The imprint on the satin lining shows this particular top hat was made by the Jordan Marsh Company of Boston, Massachusetts. No other descriptive markings are present.
Measurements are as follows:
5 1/2 inches Height
1 3/4 inches Brim width
21 3/4inches Interior Circumference
24 inches Crown Circumference
Overall this hat is a nice example of an 1880's Victorian men's top hat in a hard to find color. This piece would make a great addition to any serious collection of Victorian garments or could be a compliment to a Steampunk outfit using fine original articles. Please let me know if you have any questions regard this item or any others I have listed.
