THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS

Manners and Customs of the ancient Egyptians is a highly sought after work and contains perhaps the most comprehensive account of the ancient Egyptians ever published. Wilkinson was the first British Egyptologist properly to value the interpretation of Egyptian texts. The Quarterly Review referred to the Wilkinson’s minutely detailed and superbly illustrated work as a "restoration to life, as it were, of the ancient Pharaohs, and their subjects".
Wilkinson, inspired by Gell, went to Egypt in 1821 where he spent twelve years of continuous hard work. He carried out excavations at Thebes and traveled as far south as the second cataract and into Nubia. He was able to arrive at results similar to Champollion, but he was not as interested in hieroglyphs as he was in the tomb paintings, which he studied intensively to discover what he could of everyday life in Egypt. He poured all the intimate details of his findings in this complete three volume set.
This set contains some of the most gripping details about the Egyptians life including rituals, their military, arts, private life, government, architecture including the pyramids, and much more. The volumes contain numerous plates, some colored, some folding, and the text is profusely illustrated with woodcuts. One of the most influential works in English on Egypt, and one of the principle vehicles of Egyptomania in the 19th century.
