1885 Churro Hubbell Moki Transitional Native American Indian Navaho Rug Blanket:
Offered here is a beautiful old circa 1885-1895 Navaho rug weight weaving that measures 7 feet long by 4 foot 9 inches wide or 84” x 57”. It is attributed to the Historic Old Hubbell Trading Post / Ganado, Arizona weaving area and is in excellent condition. It was handwoven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of all Native handshorn, handcarded and smoothly handspun old long staple smooth Churro sheep wool, both weft & warp. Here is a great old transitional Hubbell Trading Post Moki weaving. Down the central vertical axis are 9 concentric diamonds with 9 corresponding half diamonds along each side. These are all floating on the Moki striped purple and black background. Great condition for a 120+ year old textile.
We obtained this vintage Native American textile from one of three big collections we obtained in Arizona just to offer you here on . It has a smooth, even weft count averaging 18 per inch and a warp count of 5 per inch. The selvage cords are all in original, excellent condition. Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are natural weft loop finished around the outside warp. The corners are all four tight, original and in excellent condition. The tassels are all four original and in excellent condition. It has not been cleaned, is pretty clean now & comes from a non-smoking home. There are several light 1” spots or stains in the red diamonds and areas or spots of what we believe are old moth tracks that have made some dark trails or spots mostly on the purple stripes. (see photos) Both sides are even in pattern color and shown in photos above. Colors are terrific in this piece of old American Indian art and they are: hand carded & hand blended natural ivory white and with hand dyed old grayish purple, transitional red, over-dyed black along with internal Spirit Trail colors of blue green Germantown, deep maroon & bright copper. Complete with lazy lines, this example of Native Americana is ready to display in your own hacienda or just tuck away in your private rug & blanket collection.
