1885 Spanish Churro Horse Pictorial Navajo Rug Blanket Native American Indian:
Offered here is a circa 1890 antique pictorial Navaho weaving that measures 6 feet 11 inches long by 3 foot 7 inches wide or 83” x 43” and is in very good + condition. It was handwoven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of all Native handshorn, handcarded and smoothly handspun very silky fine old Spanish Churro sheep wool (our favorite sheep wool to find), both weft & warp. Here is a great old, unique, single figure, pictorial weaving that is woven indicative of the earlier part of the transitional period 1885-1895. Along the sides are deep inset rods of connected diamonds. An elongated geometric stepped medallion is down the center with a very folk art styled horse head at the middle. (a very big headed roman-nosed horse… and some folks might argue they can see an aardvark or anteater in the figure, but since they didn’t have either of those critters running around the reservation during the era this was woven…then we betcha it’s a horse). If you like weavings that are uncommon &/or unusual then here is a one-of-a-kind piece for your consideration.
We obtained this vintage Native American textile private treaty just to offer you here on . It has a soft, even weft count averaging 20 per inch and a warp count of 7 per inch. The selvage cords are all intact and in very good condition with approx. 20” of side cords replaced. Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 2-spiral cords. The corners are all four tight, original and in excellent condition. The tassels are all four restored to excellent condition. It is fairly clean & comes from a non-smoking home. There are several faint 1/2” spots or stains and some yellowing patina from age. (check photos) Both sides are even in pattern color and shown in photos above. Colors are great in this piece of old American Indian art and they are: hand carded & hand blended natural grayish brown, dark chocolate brown & ivory white along with hand dyed aniline burnt orange and transitional red. Complete with lazy lines, this example of antique Native Americana is ready to display in your own hacienda or just tuck away in your private rug & blanket collection.
