This is an original Tammany Hall 1886 Fourth of July Celebrations Program. This program is a six page pamphlet format measuring about 5.75” x 8”. The front cover is decorated with American Flags and reads in part:
SOCIETY OF TAMMANY OR COLUMBIAN ORDER. ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF THE 110TH ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE, Will Be Held At TAMMANY HALL, 14th Street, near Union Square, On Monday, July 5th, 1886. Exercises will commence at 10 o’clock A.M. The program mentions Honest John Kelly, Richard Croker, Hugh J. Grant and other notables associated with the post-Boss Tweed era Tammany Hall. The Society Of Tammany or Columbian Order or simply “Tammany Hall” as it was known was a New York City Democratic Party political machine that played a major role in controlling New York City and New York State politics. Tammany Hall controlled Democratic Party nominations and political patronage in Manhattan beginning in the 1850s and used its patronage resources to build a loyal, well-rewarded core of district and precinct leaders of which the great majority were Irish Catholics. Tammany Hall also earned a reputation for graft and political corruption.
This program is an original from the 1886 Independence Day celebrations organized by Tammany Hall. Overall condition is very good with just some modest wear and toning to the paper from age. Email any questions. Thanks for looking.
