1887~e.c.atkins~u.s. Forest Service 48" Logging Saw~national Park Service Tool~ For Sale
This sale is for a rare pre-1900 antique logging saw made specially for the United States Forest Service, etched on the blade: E.C. ATKINS & CO. - TEMPERED - PATENT GROUND - SILVER STEEL - WARRANTED - NO. 654 - INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - U.S.A.- CHIPPEWA - U.S. FOREST SERVICE - stenciled on the other side of the blade: NPS (NATIONAL PARK SERVICE) - and marked on the medallion: E.C. ATKINS & CO. - PAT. DEC. 27, 1887 - INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - also stenciled on the handle: 48-S-142. The U.S.F.S. was founded in 1891, making this historic sawone of theirvery early tools and it was just recently found at the estate sale of a former career Park Ranger. This 48 inch, No. 654 Chippewa saw can be seen in the E.C. Atkins catalog from the 1890's and it has a Perforated Lance Teeth design and an Applewood Handle. Overall this rare old saw, originally sold to the Dept. of Agriculture, is in very good condition with no pitting, some very minor light spots of tarnish and blemishes and no chips or cracks in the hardwood handle. One of the perforated teeth is chipped which may have been been the reason this saw is still in great condition because itmay have been set aside and not used after that. The teeth are still sharp and I am sure it could still be used if desired but I would suggest only a little cleaning to further preserve this historic early tool of the U.S.F.S. for display only. Total length is 54" with the handle and it weighs 4 lbs. 12 ozs.
