1888 Allen & Ginter World Champions N28 Tobacco Card Album Baseball Cards #1:
Exceptionally rare and highly sought after, original, 1888 Allen & Ginter Tobacco Card Album featuring Sports Champions including Baseball Players!! This Album (designated as Tobacco Album A16 in the American Card Catalog) is titled "Album of Worlds Champions - First Series" and featuring images of all 50 Tobacco Cards from the N28 series known as "The World's Champions". Included in this Album are images of the Allen & Ginter Tobacco Cards of such legendary early baseball players as Cap Anson, John Clarkson, Charles Comiskey, Tim Keefe, King Kelly and John Ward along with other noteworthy sporting figures like bare-knuckle Boxing Champion John L. Sullivan, celebrated sharpshooter Annie Oakley and the consummate Wild West Showman and champion sharpshooter William Buffalo Bill Cody.
Of all the 19th century Tobacco Card Albums the “Album of World Champions” is THE most desirable appealing to collectors of 19th century Baseball Cards as well Tobacco Card Collectors. Besides the ten Baseball Player Cards, the Album contains wonderful Cards depicting Annie Oakley, Jack Dempsey (the original), John L. Sullivan, Doc Carver, Captain A. H. Bogardus, Jake Kilrain, Charlie Mitchell and many other great Champions of various Sports and Games including Billiards, Boxing, Shooting, Rowing, Wrestling, Weight Lifting, etc.!!
This very rare, Sports Subject Tobacco / Cigarette Card Premium Album measures approx. 6" x 8" and contains 12 leaves plus the front and rear covers printed on a light to medium weight, card stock. Each of the interior pages are printed on one side only and each features beautifully chromolithographed images of four of the Tobacco Cards from the N28 Series along with wonderful Sport Motif Images relating to the cards pictured. Two Pages are “Baseball” themed and include images of early bats, balls, an early glove, a baseball diamond, an early catcher’s mask. The cards in this series are very rare and complete sets have bee sold at sale in the $20,000+ range.
The Chromolithography is of the VERY highest quality and both the individual Tobacco Cards and this Album were lithographed by Lindner, Eddy & Clauss of New York City (signed on the front cover).
Premium Albums of this type are much rarer than the individual Tobacco Cards and were available from the Tobacco Company issuing the Cards (in this case Allen & Ginter) for a set price or in exchange for coupons issued with the same packs of cigarettes that contained the individual Cards. While the Tobacco Cards were free in packs of Cigarettes or Tobacco these Albums had to be purchased (or stamps had to be sent in for postage charges) and because of this the Albums are now much rarer and because of this, highly desirable.
This rare and very beautiful, 1888 Allen & Ginter Tobacco Company, Chromolithographed, Tobacco Card Premium Album is bound in its original wrappers but lacks the original, braided silk cord which was tied through three punched holes at the spine edge of each page. The Album is complete with all pages present including both front and rear covers. It displays beautifully however the front and rear covers are bound with an early tape repair at the central area of the spine. Otherwise both the front and rear covers are well preserved with little edge wear and no damage of any kind. There is some light soiling to both covers and a few small and light spots of staining to the rear cove only.
The interior pages are all in very good to excellent condition. All are clean and crisp and stunningly beautiful with the only damage or wear being tiny tears at the spine side of some of the binding holes on some of the pages. Because the braided silk binding cord is lacking, all of the interior pages are loose but they are all VERY well preserved and all display beautifully. As stated above, all of the interior pages are in excellent condition. All are clean and crisp and beautiful with no edge wear or wear at the corners with the only flaws being the aforementioned small edge tears at the spine edge of the binding holes. The chromolithography is bright and vibrant and all of the pages are stunningly beautiful. We have included scans of every page and of the covers of this Album to give a good indication of the condition of each leaf.
A VERY rare and VERY important, 1888 Allen & Ginter A16 Tobacco Card Album featuring Baseball Players (including Hall of Famers) and Sports Champions of the 19th century from the N28 Tobacco Card Series and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
