First Edition. 87 pages; the \"Free Soil Party\" which was the legitimate precursor of the Republican Party , was a combination of political abolitionists, anti-slavery factions and Democratic defectors; prominent in the elections of 1848 and 1852; the party nominated Martin Van Buren and Charles Adams for the Presidential ticket, who were unsuccessful in their offer for office; however, the \"Free Soilers\" succeeded in sending representatives to the House and Senate who by their ability exercised an influence out of proportion to their number (DAB); list of persons present, addresses of Edward L. Pierce, Samuel E. Sewall, Francis W. Bird, Edward Atkinson, Horace E. Smith, Thomas Drew & others; original paper wraps; just a bit of dustiness; very good condition.
