Folks, this book is 124 years old!
This is an 1889 complete and thorough guide to cookery
and
management
of Victorian homes.
Mary Virginia Terhune was a celebrated writer on domestic economy. Her
pen name was "Marian Harland." Her name was a household word during her
adult life. She
was known for her charming combination of "home making" with literary
work. Over her life, she published 25 novels, 25 non-fiction
works on homemaking and cooking, three short story collections, several
biographies, travel guides and histories, and numerous essays,
articles, and serial works. From the publication of her book "Common
Sense in the Household" in 1871, Mary enjoyed an almost separate career
as a writer of books on homemaking and cooking. She wrote
syndicated columns on women's issues for the Philadelphia North
American and Chicago Tribune. Because she was a popular and
trusted guide for homemakers, her books are a valuable addition to any
collection today.

This book is a look back in history..there is a chapter on why a woman
'must' be a lady, how to furnish a home, table etiquette and so much
more with many recipes!
The book includes several shocking statements that explain the thoughts
and ways of Victorian life.

CONDITION: This 124-year old cookbook will make the winner a
solid reading or research book. The spine has been recovered with black
leather and the original spine cloth is laid on. The pages are mostly
clear with an age spot here and there but nothing that distracts from
the contents. There is a light tide stain on pages 22 thru 33 (see pic
above). There are small flecks of color loss on the boards. I don't see any cooking stains or splatters on the pages. Three
pages have a page-turning tear in the bottom margins. The inside front
and
rear hinges are in good condition with no cracks or repairs. There are
no signs of previous ownership. Pages are not brittle. This is a solid
book.
