Presented here is the c.1890 Edition of the Ten Little Niggers published by Donohue Henneberry and Company. I do not agree with the content of this book; This item is for historical purpose only and is not my intention to offend anyone.
Originally published in 1868 under the Title of “The Ten Little Indians,” the poem began a piece of a minstrel show consisting of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music, performed by white people in blackface following the Civil War. One year later, the poem would be adapted to be more overtly racist, replacing Indians with “Nigger” circulating throughout the Minstrel Shows and children’s nursery rhyme books. This comic song married the stereotypes of violence and ignorance of blacks in order to villanize freed black males while allowing the violence to be acted upon the black players of the song.
The appearance of the ballad in children’s nursery rhyme books represents the early racist indoctrination of children. When performed as a minstrel song, Ten Little Niggers serves as entertainment; when used as a nursery rhyme, Ten Little Niggers operates as education. Ten Little Niggers not only taught a child to count down from ten, it also presented the racial construction of the black population as ‘niggers’ with equal importance. Caricatures accompanied the reprinting of the song in the nursery rhyme books. The pictures varied from edition to edition, but all were grossly exaggerated cartoons of black males.
