1890s ~ Superb Antique Silver Thimble ~ Charles Horner "daisy" Dorcas No.7:
1890s ~ Superb antique "Dorcas" Silver Thimble made byCharles Horner of Halifax, England. This example isthe "Daisy" designand is No.7 size. A brief history :-
Silver thimbles were very popular in the 19th century Victorian era but as silver was a relatively soft metal the thimbles would easily get holes and only had a lifespan of about 20 years. In 1884 Charles Horner patented his "Dorcas" thimbles which had an inner lining of steel between two layers ofsterling silver. Hence, they were far more durable and would effectively last a lifetime.
This thimble can be accurately dated to the 1890s due to the early Dorcas period having circular imprints around the"CH" and "7".Later a different type of "Dorcas" was introduced by Horner in 1905 where the steel & silver were fused together.Thesethimbles had a square imprint and the apexes of the thimbles were flatter. It is interesting to note that because these thimbles were not made only of sterling silver they cannot by law carry the traditional place/assay/date hallmarks. Horner ceased to make Dorcas thimbles in 1947.
This is an excellent, highly collectable genuine antique Victorian silver thimbleby one of England's most famous and renown makers.
