1890s Churro Childs Transitional Serape Navajo Rug Blanket Native American India:
Offered here is a circa 1890s great old Navaho weaving that measures 4 feet 10 inches long by 2 foot 11 inches wide or 58” x 35” and is in excellent condition. It was handwoven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of all Native handshorn, handcarded and beautifully handspun Churro and Churro cross sheep wool, both weft & warp. This is a very nice 110+ year old child or youth size transitional serape. The central banded panel has 3 compound stripes separated by broad ivory white zones. The compound stripe bars have serrate barbs along each side. The end panels are similar except the separating panels are carded grayish brown. A dandy old child’s transitional blanket.
We obtained this vintage Native American textile from a Wyoming cowboy friend just to offer you here on . It has a soft, smooth weft count averaging 18 per inch and a warp count of 6 per inch. The selvage cords are 100% original and in excellent condition. Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 2-spiral cords. The corners are all tight original and in excellent condition. The tassels are all four original, with two being excellent and two being good. It is pretty clean now & comes from a non-smoking home. There are about a half dozen or less very small faint tannish yellow spots all ½” or smaller. Both sides are even in pattern color and shown in photos above. Colors are great in this piece of old American Indian art and they are: hand carded & hand blended natural grayish brown, brown, ivory white, dark chocolate brown to black along with hand dyed aniline red and transitional orange red. Complete with lazy lines, this example of great antique Native Americana is ready to display in your own hacienda or just tuck away in your private rug & blanket collection.
