1890s Fold Out Trade Card Gaar-scott Steam Thresher Richmond Indiana Farming For Sale
1890s FOLD OUT Trade Card GAAR-SCOTT Steam Thresher RICHMOND INDIANA Farming
We recently acquired a small, but fantastic collection of Victorian trade cards. Looking through them, two things are immediately clear. First, that the original owner was a farmer. A large percentage of the cards are for agricultural implements. Second, that farmer attended the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Even those that are not marked as World’s Fair cards are from the same time period. All of these cards are from Ohio, Wisconsin, and Indiana.
You are offerding a gorgeous, colorful trade card advertising the Gaar-Scott & Company of Richmond, Indiana Steam Threshing Machine. This fold-out card is dated 1894 and features images of Garr Scott’s Coal and Wood Burning Engine, Straw Burning Traction Engine, and, of course, their Three Way Crank Thresher with Elevator and Recleaner. The front and back covers of this card are printed using a three color lithography process.
The card then folds out to reveal a list of eight Gaar-Scott machines. Included are the Traction Engines, Straw Burning Engines, Three Way Crank Threshers, Self-Feeder and Band Cutter, Automatic Self-Stacker, Uncle Tom’s Farmers’ Friend “Wind” Stacker, Clover Huller, and an advertisement for their Saw Mill Machinery Catalog.
This card measures 6-1/8” tall by 3-5/8” wide (7-1/4” wide when unfolded). It is in good shape overall with vivid coloring showing no sign of fading. There is a tiny amount of wear to the fold and some moderate soiling to the inside, along with a very light crease on the front cover (only visible when held in angled light). There is also a ¼” tear along the open edge of the back cover.
This late 19th century Gaar-Scott fold-out trade card would make a fantastic addition to any collection.
