1890's Raphael Tuck Embossed Die Cut Chromolithograph Ribbon Ladder Valentine #2 For Sale
Very Rare and wonderful, 1890's, 6 piece, ribbon connected Hanging Chromolithograph, Embossed and Die Cut Valentine's Day Card by Raphael Tuck in the form of a Love Letter decorated with tiny cherubs and flowers. We are not exactly sure what this type of Tuck Die Cut is called but the 6 separately die cut pieces are connected one to the next with delicate ribbons and the Card extends in a somewhat "ladder form" design.
This outstanding Chromolithograph Die Cut Valentines Day Card is made up of 6, identically die cut and embossed panels in the form of an elaborate letter with a large wax seal. Leaning over the top of each letter there is a charming figure of a young cherub / angel and the edges of the "Letter" is decorated wit small purple flowers. Each of the Panels is connected to the next by 2 delicate silk ribbons and the Card is "opened" by extending the "chain" of panels to reveal a construct approx. 14 1/2" long.
The Card is titled on the initial panel "My Love Letter" and the next four panels feature the text of a short love poem. The bottom panel features a bucolic, country cottage scene. The construct carries the mark of Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd of London, Paris and New York on the back of the bottom panel.
This wonderful, Embossed and Die Cut, Chromolithograph Valentines Day Card is in very good to excellent condition. Each of the six panels are clean and crisp and exceptionally well preserved with no tears, chipping, scuffing, repairs or damage of any other kind. The delicate ribbon that connects the panels together is broken in three places (one of two connections between two of the panels and both pieces between another two of the panels) but is otherwise present and intact. Please see the scans below for a good indication of the condition of this wonderful valentine.
