1890's Spanish American War / Admiral Dewey Mettlach Villory & Boch Lidded Stein For SaleFantastic and very rare, original, ca1898 German Mettlach / Villeroy & Boch Spanish American War / American Patriotic Beer Stein with a fantastic PUG (Printed Under Glaze) portrait of Admiral George Dewey flanked by American Flags.
This fantastic Mettlach Beer Stein / Mug measures approx. 5 3/4” tall (to the top of the domed, pewter lid) and 2 3/4” in diameter at the base. It has an impressed mark of the rim that reads "4/10 L" (held 2/5 liter of beer) and carries the inl stamp Villory & Boch / Mettlach “Mercury” mark on the Base along with an impressed style number (2218) and various impressed and ink stamp marks that are typical of Mettlach Stines of the late 19th century.
The Stein features a central portrait of Admiral Dewey with text above that reads “Battle of Manila, May 1st, 1898” and text below that reads “Admiral George Dewey”. The portrait is flanked by American Flags and by images of Spanish American War era Naval Warships.
This rare and very attractive, Pre-Prohibition Mettlach Spanish American War subject Beer Stein is in very good condition - the glaze and the colors are bright and beautiful with no chips, cracks, physical or repairs of any kind. The stoneware ground is an off white color with some areas of very light and unobtrusive discoloration to the pottery ground. The Stein retains its original, hinged pewter lid which is exceptionally well preserved.
