1890s Spun Cotton Apple With Blush, Fabric Leaf. German Tree Ornament. For Sale
Early 1890s Spun Cotton Apple, Red Blushwith Fabric Leaf. Christmas Tree Ornament.
These were formed in a mold and glued twisted cotton batting was twisted into the mold, then dired. After drying, they were air-brushed, and then mica was added for that sparkle on the Christmas tree. This one is one of the earlier ones. Most of these were white with light pastel coloration.
Cloth covered wire inserted into the top of apple.
Wonderful red blush, with hints of yellow.
And best of all, some wax drippings from an era when only candles lit the tree.
A fantastic fabric leaf attached to ornament
Great coloration, and perfect for any tree.
Really stands out as it is so bright and vivid, considering its age.
2.00" and in great condition, considering it is well over 120 years old.
Edibles have always been tree decorations--in fact the first ones. The rich decorated with edibles and then consumed them on the twelfth day of Christmas and started over again the following year. Cotton and glass fruit and vegetables were for the poor would could use them year after year after year. Yes, vegetables on the trees. Recorded early diaries recording gilded vegetables and fruit on the tree.
We are an older couple which are down-sizing. These ornaments did not fit on the trees this year, and it seems senseless to keep them in boxes in the back closet. So hopefully new caretakers can be found for these German ornaments being listed tonight.
