1890s Trade Card JANESVILLE MACHINE CO Disk Cultivator FARMING Agriculture WI
We recently acquired a small, but fantastic collection of Victorian trade cards. Looking through them, two things are immediately clear. First, that the original owner was a farmer. A large percentage of the cards are for agricultural implements. Second, that farmer attended the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Even those that are not marked as World’s Fair cards are from the same time period, give or take a few years. All of these cards are from Ohio and Wisconsin. You are offerding a gorgeous, colorful trade card advertising the Janesville Machine Company of Janesville, Wisconsin. This fold out trade card features the Janesville Disk Cultivator. Chromolithograph images of this particular farming implement dominate the front and back covers. The lithography was done by Gies & Co. of Buffalo, New York. The card then folds out to reveal a large black and white etching of the Janesville Disk Cultivator, complete with a paragraph detailing the many advantages that this cultivator provides. The local retailer’s stamp can also be found on the inside of this card. The Janesville Disk Cultivator was available through Taylor & Downs Brothers of Columbus, Ohio. This card measures 6” tall by 3-7/16” wide (6-7/8” wide when unfolded). It is in good shape overall with vivid coloring showing no sign of fading. There is a tiny amount of wear to the corners, one of which has been folded over. The center fold is a little askew. There are no notable stains on this card. This late 19th century Janesville Disk Cultivator card would make a fantastic addition to any collection.
