ONE OF A KIND1892, 1893, 1894 Handwritten Diary Grace M. GriffinOwen, Indiana Sisters: Myrtle & Gertrude (Gertie)Mother: Melvina GriffinFather: George R. Griffin Diary contains many other people's names and the specifics surrounding their relationships, births, deaths. Pretty interesting. See Notes & Details below. Apologize for the pictures, couldn't keep my shadow out - if you need other pictures just let me know. Marked Back cover has a note, signed by her, requesting that the back cover not be thrown away or discarded because it is part of her diary.NotesSuper Interesting!Lots of names, full names, noted relationships, events, references to cities and towns. This is a young girl's diary, some calligraphy, she talks about her day, what they did, what was going on.Grace became the deputy postmaster (her father the Postmaster) for the Osgood Post Office in 1893. She was paid $300 a year. Her father was pretty well known, worked as a newspaper man, postmaster, and ran for Senator. If I had to guess based on what she wrote and how positive she was, her family was probably pretty well off and well known. For example, she speaks of her father giving her $17.00 for her birthday, the carriage they had, all the trips they took, and never makes mention of anything to do with a lack of money, food, or shelter (the basics). Griffin is an English, Irish, and Welsh surname, with different but related origins in each case. For Welsh, it comes from the Old Welsh "Gruffydd", meaning dragon-lord; with English, it's the High German "grifan", which means to snatch, as a dragon was thought to do. As an Irish name, it descends from "O'Griobhtha", meaning son of the griffin. In any case, the first recorded incident of Griffin family history is Robert Griffin, on the Pipe Rolls of Warwickshire in 1130. Griffin genealogy includes Union General Charles Griffin, comedian Eddie Griffin, British National Party Chairman Nick Griffin, and television executive/host Merv Griffin.

UPDATE I added 2 more pictures that show where she is talking about two different quilts that she made or was planning to make. All throughout the pages there are references to sewing and quilting. She mentions her mom making aprons for her aunt, she mentions making dresses for her sister's dolls, she mentions making a doll hat for a family friend's little girl, and on and on. I haven't read every entry, but I have read the majority of the diary. One interesting thing that she does say is, she writes that this was the first time she kept a diary and that once she was done filling up the notebook, she wasn't sure she'd keep another one, it all depended on whether she could find another notebook that she liked.
