of the
World's Columbian Exposition
Comprising Its
Marvelous Architecture, Sculptures, Artistic, Mechanical, Agricultural
Industrial, Archaeological, Ethnological, Historical
and Scenic Attractions

The lengthy captions below the photos are as interesting as the photos! They give details of building costs, facts, successes, failures, and sometimes a little gossip about the photo topics! There are many photos that I've never seen in any other Chicago World's Fair history photo book!

About the fair: The World's Columbian Exposition ( The Chicago World's Fair ), a World's Fair, was held in Chicago in 1893, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of the New World. Chicago bested New York City, Washington, DC and St. Louis, Missouri, for the honor of hosting the fair. The fair had a profound effect on architecture, the arts, Chicago's self image and American industrial optimism.

The exposition was located in Jackson Park and on the Midway Plaisance on 630 acres in the neighborhoods of Hyde Park and Woodlawn. The layout of the fairgrounds was created by Frederick Law Olmsted. It was a coming-of-age for the arts and architecture of the "American Renaissance". Most of the buildings were based on classical architecture, and the area taken up by the fair around the Court of Honor was known as "The White City".

The Fine Arts Building was purposely constructed to last. The other buildings at the fair were all intended to be temporary. Architecture critics described the structures as "decorated sheds". The "White City," however, so impressed everyone who saw it (at least before air pollution began to darken the facades) that plans were considered to refinish the exteriors in marble or some other material. Sadly, these plans had to be abandoned in July 1894 when much of the fair grounds was destroyed in a fire.

Three days before the fair was scheduled to close, Chicago mayor Carter Harrison, Sr. was assassinated. A massive closing ceremony was planned, but was canceled due to the assassination. The closing ceremony was expected to break the record the fair had already set on Chicago Day for the most single-day attendance of a major event.
COPYRIGHT: 1893 with no indications of additional printings
PUBLISHER: Thompson Publishing
PAGES: Unpaginated, approximately 250 pgs. measuring 11" x 14"
CONDITION: The book has rec'd some TLC and is now a solid book, ready for another century! This large book has stiff boards that have edgewear and corner bumping with most of the leather corners chipped. The leather has been sealed while the outside spine has been re-covered with black leather. Inside hinges are in good condition with correct reinforcement between the first two blank endpapers. There are no signs of previous ownership. It's rare to find a book of this size in solid condition with no page issues but this one is solid with no loose or missing pages! Pages are in good condition with just a couple small page turning tears (less than 1/2") with no pieces missing. Pages have very few age spots and pages are not brittle. There is a basement odor to the book due to storage. There is a small tide mark starting near the back of the book affecting the last 20 pages or so.... starts very small in the top margin only and progresses to only 1/2 " at the end of the book in the top margin only. All page edges are red. This is a solid book and will make a great reading/research book for the lucky winner!

I've sold several photo books about the 1893 Chicago World's Fair but this one contains photos I've never seen in other books!
For example: • construction of the ferris wheel axle;
• a 'new' electric paint machine used to paint buildings;
• double-circle electroiler lights in the Manufactures Building;
• the stage of the Cairo theater with dancers and
• a construction photo of the movable sidewalk in Jackson Park just to mention a few!
