We are pleased to offer this wonderful and unusual redwork embroidery friendship quilt that is dated 1893 in the center block. The quilt was quilted on a treadle sewing machine. The quilting consists of ½ inch squares. There is an amazing amount of work in this “machine” quilting when you consider that the treadle must be rotated once for each stitch. There are 25 blocks that were embroidered by separate individuals and then assembled and quilted by one person. It measures 81 inches by 69 ½ inches. The center block with the dog and the date is signed by members of the Clark family, including Reverend M. N. Clark. Because of that information, I believe that this quilt was a gift to a member of the Reverend’s church. It could have been a gift of remembrance to either a person or a family leaving the area or possibly a gift for a special occasion, such as a wedding or anniversary. This would make a great genealogic project for a quilt historian. I don’t know the history since I purchased it at the estate sale of an elderly collector.

The Victorian images denoted in the various blocks are delightful and also somewhat insightful. They depict everyday life such as washing and ironing clothes, there is a woman  and her dog sitting among the clouds on a quarter moon. Among my favorites are the “wise” owls reading their books, the laundress, and the Asian lady in her kimono. The upper right block was done by Roy B. Phillips. Yes, a man contributed a square too.

The Quilt does show wear, especially on the back of the top edge. There is also wear on some of the seams on the back that connect the blocks as well as some areas on the binding. There is browning in one area of the back that was probably caused by being stored against the wood in a chest. There are two light stains on the front and one mended area on the top edge and a small ½ inch break (also near the top edge) that could easily be repaired. There are also a few other small stains that are to be expected in a quilt that was used and is 122 years old. The flaws that I have listed are clearly shown in my images. The cotton fabric is crisp, and with the exception of the top edge wear, and in very good condition. I have taken the condition issues into consideration when setting my Buy It Now price.
