The History of Bleikristall/Hofbauer by Owner

Hofbauer Red Byrd was Made in Western Germany from 1896 to 1954

The Bleikristall Hofbauer Plant Closed in 1954

The Company did not Date their Pieces of Hand Cut and Hand Painted Red Byrd Crystal or The Clear Bird Crystal - It is very difficult to know when the Pieces of The Red Byrd or the Clear Bird Collection were made. The Only tell tale sign of when the Collection was made is the color of the Hand Flashed Red Byrd Pieces.{See Below}

Many Year\'s Ago I purchased my first piece of Hofbauer/Bleikristall from a Man in Western Germany who happened to live across the Street from the Hofbauer/Bleikristall Factory. At first he gave me the Information on when the Factory was opened and when it closed. As I purchased more Red Byrd from him he started to explain about the Red Color of the Red Byrd Collection and how to date it. He also offered some information on the Clear Byrd Collection too. He said since the Red Birds were Hand Painted that the more Brilliant The Red the newer the piece or it may be a piece that was never exposed to sunlight~ The Off Red Tones and The Faded Red {or the Red/Violet Color} of the Red Byrd Collection are more than likely the Older Pieces and could date back as far as 1896 ~

The Older The Pieces the More Desirable to Collectors also to mention here is they must not have any cracks or chips to be Collectable. Thus started my Red Byrd Collection ~ Some of my Bleikristall/Hofbauer Red Byrd are Brilliant Red and some have a Violet Red Hue or a Deep Red almost Burgundy Color.

He did interestingly explain that some of the Clear Bird Pieces are truly from the RED BYRD LINE but were placed in a Dishwasher repeatedly or harsh cleaners came in contact with the Red Byrd and the Beautiful Clear Red eventually came completely off thus making a newly found piece from the Clear Byrd Collection. No longer from the Red Byrd Collection.

He further said that The Red Byrd & Clear Bird were designed in 1896 for every day use. The Designer balanced every piece to go from Table to Refrigerator even though some pieces date as far back as 1896. He further said that some of the Ice Boxes in the late 1800\'s and the Early 1900\'s had Solid Shelves making any of the Bird pieces stable; even the 3 Toed Pieces were stable.

Note Here; it is very important that you know where the Red Byrd you are about to purchase came from. My Collection came from the Gentleman I met many years ago in Western Germany who at the time was was selling the duplicates in his Bleikristall/Hofbauer Glass Collection.

I am always seeking any additional information I can get on the History of the Red Bryd Collection.
