“Albert Edward,
Prince of Wales.”This is a full-page single sheet which was published in the June 23, 1898, issue of the humor magazine Life (not to be confused with the later photo-journal of the same name). It is 115 years old.The piece measures 8.5 x 10.5 inches in size and is in excellent condition. It presents a great charcoal sketch caricaturing the popular British Prince who known as “Bertie,” three years before he became King Edward VII upon the death of his mother Queen Victoria. The artist is not identified, but the drawing is finely detailed and expressive.Elsewhere in the issue was a short descriptive item related to the cartoon, and that page will be included with the print. The humorous text says, in part:“Every first-class Power should have at least one gentleman as an adjunct. That, in Great Britain, the responsibilities and duties attached to this office are fully absorbed and duly assimilated by Albert Edward, Prince-in-Waiting, no one will presume to doubt.“. . . . he has now a bonded indebtedness which is well calculated to bring the blush of humiliation even unto J. Pierpont Morgan, and . . . what might have been the stern necessity of doing odd jobs around the palace . . . has been avoided. . . .“While the great nation to which he belongs is preparing for war . . . Albert Edward, too, has his trials. New clothes must be ordered, new cravats must be selected . . . American girls must be entertained . . .
