1898 CENTRAL DAKOTA TELEPHONE COMPANY

Incorporated Under the Laws of the State of South Dakota

Stock certificate #43, issued to A. D. Maxwell for 2 shares worth $100 each. Bright, shiny-gold corporate seal. ABERDEEN, SOUTH DAKOTA printed beneath the title and in the seal.

Hand-signed on front and back by John L. W. Zietlow, company president. Mr. Zietlow was born in Prussia (Germany) in 1850, where he was a watchmaker. After coming to the United States, one of his jobs was at a lumber mill in Winona, Minnesota where he suffered an accident that cost him an arm. He later moved to South Dakota where he began experimenting with telephone apparatus in 1879. He had a patent on something called a \"Protector for Telephone\". I encourage you to Google his name for a more complete story. He was quite an interesting man.

Two early documentary stamps are affixed to the upper-left corner. E. G. Porter, secretary.
