1898 Columbia B Cylinder Phonograph W/10" Nickel Horn * Excellent * Plays Great:
Make sure to check out all of my sales after you've looked at this one. I'm listing an eclectic assortment of hard-to-find technological, musical and mechanical antiques, and I suspect there will be something of interest to almost everyone. Here's a beautiful Columbia "B" cylinder phonograph with an excellent, undamaged lid, a superb original lid decal that's still bright gold and black, and a smooth-running mechanism that's still nicely nickeled. The open works "B," known also as the Eagle, was one of the most popular cylinder phonographs ever made. In production for almost 10 years, it was powered by a compact single-spring motor that was so reliable it was used in almost all of Columbia's coin-operated commercial phonographs. With its nickel-plated motor-housing and mandrel turning in one direction, its governor weights and power gear spinning in another direction, and its reproducer advancing horizontally along the carriage rod, the Eagle was arguably as much fun to watch as it was to hear.
As you can see in the photographs, this particular "B" is in great condition throughout. The motor is still robust, and the governor keeps the mandrel spinning at a steady speed. The winding key is original, as is the large diaphragm floating reproducer. The underside of the base retains its 3 original feet. The nickel horn is a replica, but it's beautiful, and it's the correct horn for this machine.Overall, this is a well maintained antique phonograph that doesn't need any tweak or repairs or parts in order to be enjoyed immediately. If you've been hunting for a really nice, working cylinder phonograph to occupy a small space in your home or office, it's worth considering. I'll include an ancient oil can and a 2-minute Columbia Indestructible cylinder with the phonograph so it will be ready to play as soon as it arrives. If you get tired of listening to the cylinder, there are plenty of other titles available on and elsewhere. The machine plays Edison cylinders too, I should note, along with those made by Oxford, Lakeside, etc. And if you're not already familiar with how tooperate an early cylinder phonograph, don't worry. I'll provide you with simple, easy to understandset-up instructions,so you'll be able to use it within minutes after you unpack it and put it together. That's about it.
