1898 Presentation Cup Louis Fett Toronto Ont Harley Davidson Christie Drumeir Vg:
unusual item is on the chopping block this morning, again from the
huge estate sale in Tawas this past summer. This is a presentation
cup dated 1898 and has the name Harley Davidson etched on back, as
one of the presenters we are assuming. We can find no info
about why this cup was presented. We emailed the Toronto Sun
trying to find out anything about the cup, but they never returned
our inquiry. This is a very beautiful cup having three handles
and silver plated. The bottom has some markings, a "0 9 0", a circle with "Quadruple Plate" and a tiny Swastika looking symbol and another same size circle with only "Company" legible along with what looks like a little tiny Swastika symbol. The name of the company looks like it might start with "TOR", but only a guess with what you can see with a loop. There is something on top of the lettering. This cup stands 5 1/2" tall and about 4
1/2" across the mouth of the cup and about 73/16" at
the widest across the handles. The cup reads on front
"Presented To Louis F. Fett March 31st 1898 Toronto, Ont."
and on the back "Genie Harlan Drumeir Polly Stockwell Nettie Marshall
Cummings Jack Drumeir Thos. G. Soole Addison Pitt George S. Christie
Harry Glazier M. S. Robinson H. H. Bamkin A. Mc Connaughy Charles
Campbell Wm Sloan Harry V. Woodhouse Harley Davidson Wm Boyd Ed.
Berken. Some of the names or letters may be incorrect, this cursive
writing is hard to decipher. The top rim has lots of ripples
and wavy and light light dents, a very small dent or flat spot on front near the bottom, there are scratches and really no or tiny amount
of wear on the cup, but overall a spectacular piece! There is
no other damage or repairs. The inside is discolored looks like
it may have held water, but only a guess, there is a line where it
gets darker just below the rim, there is a round spot with rust
looking ring, maybe a steel cup or can sat in the bottom? Or maybe this was to hold ice and a bottle of Champagne. We're
sure you will appreciate the beauty of this after receiving it, no
picture shows it truly. The bottom has wear, scratches and
discoloration. This is very heavy for its size weighing around
1lb. 13 oz. The handles are very ornate. There are dents
on the tops of the handles, probably from falling over all the years,
but these are very hard to see if you are not looking very carefully.
There are no nicks on the sides of the cup. There is a
small amount of plating coming off under two handles. You can
tell this is where fingers made contact when picking up over all the
years. We have not cleaned this in any way and needs no
cleaning in our opinion. This would make a nice history detective project for you. The cup would make a great display or for everyday use in your life. This will be packed with bubble wrap, extra cardboard inside the box and Styrofoam and shipped in a double walled cardboard box for a safe arrival to you. This would make a great Christmas gift for the Harley guy in your life!
