Original 1899 First Edition of “The Chronicles of Aunt Minervy Ann” by Joel Chandler Harris :: Published by New York: Charles Scribner's Sons :: Measures 5 1/2 x 8 1/4" :: Complete with 210 Pages. CONDITION: A tightly bound volume, solid hinges, clean pages throughout, creasing to rear end paper, cover wear as shown, complete with all pages and illustrations; overall a very good condition example of this Black American Classic.
Here is The Chronicles of Aunt Minervy Ann, a vintage 19th Century Black Americana book about a strong tempered black woman proud of her African heritage written by Joel Chandler Harris. She give the black Republican Legislature a run for the money, runs a bakery business, and keeps the lower-class white folks on their toes. But she has a soft spot for her white family. The first chapter beings with an evening with the Ku-Klux Klan and subsequent chapters continue with strong racial undertones. Much of the book is told in Negro dialect of the time, typical of old black Americana books.
The book contains Thirty-two full page illustrations by A.B. Frost. Frost is considered one of the great illustrators in the "Golden Age of American Illustration". As a whole, it is a fascinating account of the racial sentiments of the era and would make a nice addition to a Black Americana Collection.
