Mapis ORIGINAL as published in1899 and NOT a photocopy.
For sale here is an 1899NORTH & SOUTH DAKOTAIndian Land Cessions Map showing colored areas keyed to treaties and transfers of Indian lands as described inRoyce, Indian Land Cession of the United States (Part 2), Bureau of American Ethnology 1899.
Key search words: Native american, reservation, reservations,
genealogy. This is a very nice early double page map of NORTH & SOUTH DAKOTA. Map itself is
not dated but accompanied the 18th Annual Report of the Bureau of American
Ethnology 1896-97 Part II titled INDIAN LAND CESSIONS IN THE UNITED STATES
compiled by Charles O. Royce. This report was published in 1899. This is a very nice early colored map of North and South Dakota showing
historical points of interest, some dated as early as 1865, as well as Indian
villages, cities, towns, rivers and lakes. First some Indian names I see such as Lower Mandan Village,
Old Mandan Village, Standing Rock Agency, Devil's Lake Agency, Red Cloud Post,
Sioux Falls, Berth Old Indian Village, Crow Creek Agency, Wahpeton, Cheyenne
River, Sisseton Agency, Reipan, and Rosebud Agency. Some fortsinclude Old Fort
Union Military Reservation, Ft. Buford, Old Ft. Clark, Ft. A. Lincoln, Ft.
Yates, Ft. Hale, Ft. Sully, Old Ft. Sully, Old Ft. George, Ft. Sisseton, Ft.
Pembina, Ft. Pierre, Ft. Thompson, Ft. Meade, Ft. Lookout, Ft. Randall, and more
I probably have missed. A few names of towns and villages include Hot Springs,
Minnesela, Pierre, Presho, Oacoma, Chamberlain, Vermillion, Millbank, Deadwood, Onida, Flandreau, Salem, Sturgis, Plankinton, Napoleon, Bismarck, Sykeston, Cooperstown, Grand
Forks, Rolla, Williston, Medora, Dickinson, Williamsport, and many more. A dated
item on map includes Brules Reserve by Treaty of Oct 14, 1865. This is a
double page map with one horizontal fold as published across the center. Map is in excellent
blank back on medium weight coated paper with areas colored green, yellow, gray,
pink, peach, and blue. Scale is 45 miles to 1 inch. Lithographer was A. Hoen & Co., Balt.
Mapped area measures approx 9 1/2" by 11", double page measures approx 11 1/4" by 14 1/2" and would
look great matted and/or framed.Since map is larger than my scanner bed I had to scan it in 2 parts, top half andbottom half. The text to Royce (Pt. 2) runs about 500 pages and is very long and detailed. It is readily available on line and is not included. TheNorth & SouthDakota info is only a very small fraction of that text. It's easy to find the references digitally by using the numbers shown on the map.
Satisfaction guaranteed, successful buyer to prepay and include $2.50 forfirst classmailing. Thank you.
MAP IS MUCH SHARPER AND CLEARER IN REAL LIFE THAN IT IS IN MY BLURRY
