From a Catalina Foothills estate in Tucson some years ago is this compelling 18th or possibly earlier 19th Century Mughal miniature portrait in gouache and gold of an East Indian \"Prince\", in this case apparently the Majaraja or Raja of Bikaner. I say apparently, because an old collector\'s inscription to verso also says something about Bahadur and Radhor. This is not an area of expertise for me and these distinctions are confusing to say the least. I have found various portrait depictions from the Rathore Dynasty on line, including some who resemble this man; that said, I cannot say with certainty who is depicted, but you might know…let me know if so. The mentioned old inscription indicates an age of \"125 YEARS\" - keep in mind that would be from the time written and now a much greater number of years; there is also a line of East Indian script verso which may provide some further information. Condition is reasonably good for the age with a genuine aura of time to the painted surfaces - no one would mistake this for one of the modern copies still produced by skilled artists in Rajasthan. . The sheet shows some expected minor toning but is strong and assuredly not laid down to any backing. There is an ancient crease diagonally transecting the field at left side of the sheet; while certainly visible, it is away from the subject and actually not so obtrusive. There is some typical and expected wear to the painted surfaces, and also some small areas of missing pigment …primarily to the upper arm of the figure and the right end of his pillow. There are remnants of old scrap paper hinges that once held this to a mount or matting. That said, a wonderful and splendidly executed genuine antique Mughal portrait of a dignitary. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Sheet size is about 7 1/2 in. high and 5 3/16 in. across. If you collect Mughal and other historic East Indian traditional art - especially such compelling portraits of royalty in the long ago, or simply wish this single improvement to the ambiance of a room in your home, this will have great meaning for you
