This listing is for a vintage, deeply-carved, 18k gold cuff bracelet by Northwest Coast Native American artist, John Alexander. Measuring 3/4\" wide and 6\" long, this will fit a wrist between 6 1/4\" - 6 3/4\" in circumference. Depicting a Dogfish, or Shark, this cuff represents agility and passion. It is signed on the inside and weighs 26 grams.Gitxsan artist John Alexander\'s work includes jewellery in gold and silver. Early in his career, he was fortunate to have as his mentor the late Bud Mintz, who introduced him to the artists who were to have such a strong impact on his training and growth. He received formal training in design and technique at Vancouver Community College, from 1991 to 1993. He also trained with Phil Janze and Don Yeomans. Prior to working as a fine art jeweler on a full-time basis, John was a welder and fabricator. His acquired knowledge of metallurgy has effectively been applied to his work with precious metals. John\'s jewellery is characterized by bold lines, deep carving and flawless craftsmanship. He is also well known for his use of repousse carving. His family crest is that of Frog. A small bottom-feeding shark, the Dogfish is not considered appealing as food. Dogfish is an important crest and mythic being among the Haida, and is one of Haida artist Robert Davidson’s favorite subjects. Haida artist Bill Reid also created many impressive Dogfish designs. Depictions of Dogfish feature high, domed heads, that actually represent the snout. Other traits include: sharp, triangular teeth in a large, down-turned, mouth; parallel lines representing gills in the cheeks; large, round eyes with elliptical pupils; prominent spines; and large, asymmetrical tail flukes. Dogfish images may also feature a hooked, beakish nose, and a separate pair of circular designs representing nostrils, which on sharks are located on the underside of the head.
