18th Century Wedgwood Black Basalt Lidded Creamer & Sucrier (c.1768-69)
This early Wedgwood creamer and sucrier ar rare not only for their age but for their intact lids.
The figural finials on the lids are women in neo-classical robes. One woman holds an open book. The other pulls her wraps around her with a pensive, downcast gaze.
The rounded lids are engine turned and bordered with a freize of stylized leaves finished with a fine, ridged band. The bodies of both pieces have a flat wide, centre band with raised putti, singly and in groups.
The bottoms are finished with an engine-turned band in the same linear pattern as the lids. The creamer rests on a rounded pedestal with a ridged, rounded border.
Josiah Wedgwood introduced black basalt in in 1768. It was created by using a reddish brown clay that burns black in firing due to maganese. The neo-classical friezes and finials are of the highest quality and date from the early period of his career.
This cream and sugar would be an exceptional addition to a fine collection of Wedgwood or to an elegant Regency style room.
Marked: 'Wedgwood" with typeset letters, the mark used in the period between 1759-69 (pictured) .
Measures: Creamer is 6" high with lid. Sucrier is 5 1/2 " H x 2 1/2" at the base.
Excellent condition: The creamer spout has a tiny, flat chip. No other damage or restoration (pictured).
