This a rare 17th century large sailing ship wheel. It was dry docked with the initials DJW May 30, 1914. We are researching the origin of this large sailing ship. The center of the wheel has the original spectacular crafted connecting solid wood hub that measures 19 and 3/8 inches long by 12 inches wide.
The center of the rear and front hub has a metal ribbed assembly roller sprocket on each endwith a one inch hole going end to endthat was part of the shipping steer controls. The exterior of the center hub has the original rope markings of the rope steering assembly. There is also the original metal ring (broken in center) attached to the hub exterior that was used to latch the rope assembly.
