This sale is forone (1 only) 18th C. Chinese Sang-De-Boeuf Kangxi Period Meiping Vase that is covered with a beautiful Langyao type copper-red glaze. Copper-red glazes were first perfected during the Xuande period, but fell from use due to the difficulties of production resulting in a high failure rate. They were not successfully created again until the Kangxi Emperor ordered large amounts to be produced. Besides the usual thinly applied copper-red glaze, a Kiln Master named Lang circa 1705 - 1712 developed a very special type of thick crackled copper-red that is embedded in a clear glaze and has a magically jewel like appearance. That is the type of glaze we have on this beautiful example.
This special shaped bottle vase is called Meiping. The Langyao glaze thins or 'drains away' at the top of the neck leaving an area sprinkled with spots of red over a crackled mushroom glaze. It then turns into a rich crushed strawberry red glaze that becomes a dark raspberry glaze that continues down the whole body. This Kangxi example exhibits 100% control of the glaze at the base with absolutely no grinding. Late 18th century and later examples were haphazardly glazed with the glaze running to the base of the kiln which would require grinding after being chipped from the sagar. The interior of the neck and inside of the body are glazed a crackled light mushroom off-white. The inside of the base is finished with the a crackled celadon or peach-bloom colored glaze.
