19 Plus Letters Written 1886-9 From Coquille To Zenas Strang In Portland Oregon For Sale
I have not read all the letters but they are sent from family members, also named STRANG, that lived in Coquille, Oregon City and Myrtle Point areas of Oregon to a son that was attending school in Portland, Oregon. Many letters contain more than one person's letter in a single envelope or have added their message on the same sheet of paper. Emily Strang, the mother, seems to have always written in pencil.Letters talk about other relatives, an unapproved wedding, life in a rural area, dogs killing sheep, someone with a cough and the medicine to treat it, a steamer trip to Frisco, etc. These might be of interest to someone looking up their genealogy or to someone having an interest in Oregon history. This family were obviously early day pioneers of Oregon.All letters have their stamps missing and envelopes measure a small 5 1/2" x 3 1/4" and the lined letter writing paper measuring as much as 16" x 12". Handwriting is legible. Strang Sr. had fine penmanship and was probably more educatied than his wife. Locks of blonde hair is in some of he letters. Letters are long- most are 2 or 3 pages on both sides of the paper. In some cases even the margins have been used to write on. Some letters are 6 or more pages long.Many of the photos and cabinet cards I have up for sale are related to these letters. Tonight's listings are really a treasure trove of life in early day Oregon.
