"1900~BLACK JACK MINE"
In 1863, GOLD was discovered in the Owyhee Mountains of Idaho. First, PLACER GOLD in the streams, and then Quartz Veins, which yielded both GOLD and SILVER. This started a mining boom . Between 1863 and 1865, according to a historical brochure from the Idaho Hotel in Silver City, more than 250 mines were in operation in the area, and hundreds more were developed thereafter. Silver City claimed the first telegraph and the first daily newspaper in the Idaho territory. This lasted until 1875, when the failure of the Bank of California--a major financier of the mines--led to a mining depression. But by the 1890s mining had boomed again in the Owyhees after smaller claims were consolidated by one William Dewey, who enjoyed the considerable financial backing of the Mellon family. During this period, Silver City's population peaked at an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 people; the town in its heyday had about a dozen streets, 75 businesses, 300 homes and six ore-processing mills, according to the hotel brochure.
