1900 Needles Ca. Colorado Riv Mojave Desert Frank Gabbert (a Saloon) Token Rare For Sale
You are offerding on a VERY BEAUTIFUL AND SCARCE (TOUGH TO FIND ONE THIS NICE FROM THIS DESERT TOWN)old "good for"trade token once as "GOOD FOR 1 DRINK" used at a business which was simply referred to as "FRANK B. GABBERT" ( HE RAN A SALOON)business once located in old thirsty desert town NEEDLES, California.
It is tough to find old tokens from NEEDLES (and this is one you just never see)...just a tougher town, I bought a little collection of them, and will be selling them on . The town of Needles is located in far Eastern San Bernardino county, on the famed Colorado River. Needles was founded in 1883, and not too far from famed "Fort Mohave" on the Colorado. Town is located east of Essex California and not too far from the Mojave Valley, Fort Mohave Az, Bullhead City, Lake Havasu City, Laughlin Nevada region.
The old town of NEEDLES is a hot town in the summer, and is known for the proliferation of SALOONS, BARS and LIQUOR related businesses...it was a thirsty historic mojave desert town....with lots of railroad workers....so it seems most tokens are "liquor" related...and this is no exception :)
This is beautiful token, and have been told that proprietor "FRANK B. GABBERT" ran a saloon / drinkingestablishment...so anybody in old downtown Needles back in the 1900s would have known where this business was....and what Mr. GABBERT did for a living :)...also note token says "GOOD FOR 1 DRINK" on both sides
If you look in the original California token book (issued 1976, Kappen) this token is listed under the town of "NEEDLES" as first one in the catalog, listing K-16, variety with LA RUBBER STAMP on one site. This is a very attractive diamond shaped brass token, and one you seldom see available. Tokens from Needles are tough to find. (last I heard, walmart is all sold out of this particular model)
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE TOKENS, THAT WOULD TYPICALLY DUG AND BADLY PITTED....OFFERED HERE IS A GORGEOUS EXAMPLE. both sides are the same except one has maker marks
Trade token is brass, diamond shaped, about 23mm in diameter, and it displays nicely.(please see pictures in gallery) If you collect tokens, you know how brass desert tokens can look.......this is beautiful chocolate desert brown background patina!!
Gallery pictures should show you all you need to know.
While manyold California tradetokens can be in "dug" condition, this is a "problem free" token.
Attractive and RARE to find old"good for" trade token once used at the "FRANK B. GABBERT (used at Saloon, Bar)" business , located in the historic old thirsty downtown of NEEDLES, California.
Low reserve for a token of this rarity.
Thanks so much for looking....collect and invest inhistory!!!!! Tangible assets are always the best ones.
