1901 Souvenir Medal - 125th Anniversary Boston Evacuation Day, British Retreat:
$15

This medal is a souvenir of the 1901 celebration of the 125th anniversary of 'Boston Evacuation Day.' This event commemorates the retreat of the British occupation forces from Boston on March 17, 1776 in the face of a very strong showing by the Continental Army. This retreat was Washington's first victory of the Revolutionary War and provided an immense morale boost to the Colonies.

The front of this very attractive medal shows a group of Colonial soldiers (including Washington) on horseback, surrounded by cannons and cannon balls, viewing the evacuation from their position on Dorchester Heights. Along the upper rim is HOSTIBUS PRIMO FUGATIS (tr: THEIR FIRST FLIGHT) and, beneath the image, is BOSTONIUM RECUPERATUM XVII MARTIN (sometimes given as MARTII) MDCCLXXVI (tr: Boston recovered 17 March 1776). The reverse has a magnificent wreath enclosing the words SOUVENIR 125TH ANNIVERSARY EVACUATION DAY BOSTON, MASS. 1901. This medal was struck very well, with considerable detail in the design. It measures approximately 38 mm (1-1/2") in diameter, and it appears to be composed of bronze or copper.

This item is in very good condition, with even wear, toning, and soiling. This item is much lighter in color and much brighter than evident in the photos.
