From "Uniform of the Army of the United States (Illustrated) From 1898 to 1907, Volume II"

This original print is taken from the above portfolio which was produced from original paintings of United States Army uniforms by Henry A. Ogden, who is considered by many the greatest of American military artists.

The United States Army, through its Quartermaster General, commissioned Ogden to record the history of its uniform. The resultant 44 prints were published in 1890 in portfolio form. Ogden, with the Quartermaster General\'s sanction, continued this project to cover the later years of 1888 through 1907 when significant changes in uniform took place.

The preparation of these paintings was an enormous task to which Ogden devoted uncounted hours of research before touching brush to the canvas. His usual custom was to portray four or five soldiers of different rank in each picture, posing them in typical military setting. The paintings have strength and character but they retain a certain naivete in the depiction of the facial expressions that adds immeasurably to their charm. Ogden\'s younger officers are dashing and handsome; the senior officers are grave and dignified; the private soldier is keen-eyed and loyal - all of them rendered in the romantic tradition of a still youthful United States Army.
