A beautiful original andvery scarcecolor chromolithograph from a very rare 120+ year-old book, The Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission, Vol. XXIII for 1903, by George M. Bowers. The Aquatic Resources of the Hawaiian Islands: Part 1 - The Shore Fishes by David Starr Jordan and Barton Warren Evermann. Color illustrations based on oil and water color paintings of living specimens by Charles Hudson, A. H. Baldwin, and Kako Morita. Color lithography by Julius Bien and Co., NY.
There were only 250 copies of this report made, making thesebooks veryrare andexpensive ($3000 to $5,000) and even harder to find the plates. Check out the prices I found for these color plates at a Hawaiian Island Art Store, KAUAI FINE ARTS, Lawai, Hawaii, web page. Please cut and paste this

This is your chance to own avery rare fish plate from a very rare fisheries report forA LOT less than their prices!
Each plate has the name of the book in top left corner, plate number in top right corner, name of artist in bottom right, name of printer bottom left corner, and name of fish under fish. This single-sided plate with no text on the verso, printed on a very interesting heavier paper which measures approximately 10 1/2" wide and7 1/2" high. The plate shows some yellow toning that is typical of plates this old adding a nice patina.
The plate is in great condition. Scanner created uneven toning and made the listing picture blotchy. The print is evenly toned and clean. Each plate has the holes at the top of the plate where it was attached to the volumn in which it came; however, can easily be matted out and framed. There are some very light water stains on the left edge and right edge, whichis hardly noticable and can be eailsy matted and framed out as well.
Dr. T. Barrow describes the full page, single-sided color fish plates in a later reprint as follows: "The illustrations are a marvel of patient drawing and of the lithographer's art. The color plates belong to an era when color illustrations could be made only by laborious manual processes, in this instance by printing from lithographic plates that were printed many times to achieve the delicate hues and tints essential to Hawaiian fish illustration. The original plates are a collector's delight in their own right and are much favored by antiquarian print sellers. Also decorators use them to hang framed on walls. And since the book was originally published in a limited edition, original copies are now almost unavailable."
