1905 Native American Indian Maiden Sterling Silver Figural Handle Souvenir Spoon For Sale
Beautiful and very rare, ca1905, Sterling Silver, Native American Indian / Niagara Falls, Figural Handle Souvenir Spoon with a wonderful, double sided figure of a bare breasted Indian Maiden lying in a canoe.
This outstanding, Souvenir Spoon measures approx. 5 1/2" long and has a figure of a beautiful Native American Indian Maiden lying on her back in a canoe and paddling through turbulent waters. This image represents the Indian legend known as the “Maid of the Mist” in which an Indian Girl lost her husband and her hope at a young age, and the beautiful girl could not find her way through the sorrow upon sorrow that was her lot in life. So she stepped one day into her canoe, singing a death song softly to herself, and paddle out into the current. Soon the canoe was caught by the rough waves and hurtled toward the falls of Niagara. But as it pitched over and she fell, Heno, the god of thunder who lived in the falls, caught the maiden gently in his arms and carried her to his home beneath the thundering veil of water.
The bowl of the Spoon is cast with an image of the Falls and the words "Niagara Falls". In the foreground the tourist Steamboat “Maid of the Mist” can be seen plying the waters at the base of the Falls. The Spoon is marked Sterling and carries the hallmark of the manufacturer - The Watson Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts.
