1905 Wright & Taylor Whiskey Tin Litho Advertising Serving Tray Kentucky Whiskey:
Very rare and very wonderful, original ca1905 Wright & Taylor Distillers of Louisville, Kentucky Pre-Prohibition, Tin Lithographed Advertising Serving Tray for their “Fine Old Kentucky Taylor" Whiskey featuring a fantastic bird’s-eye-view of the distillery as well as two beautiful young women wading in the waters of the Ohio River.
This outstanding and very rare, Tin Litho Pre-Prohibition Tray measures 12" in diameter and features a wonderful bird‘s-eye-view of the complex of Distillery buildings with large storage tanks and a railroad train running through the complex down to the banks of the Ohio River. The lower portion of the central image area features a rather bucolic scene of two beautiful young women having a wonderful time on the banks of the river. One woman stands in the waters of the river her bare legs exposed as she lifts her skirt to avoid getting it wet. Her companion sits on a rock by the side of the water with her legs crossed exposing her black stockings in what was at the time a rather risque manner. To the left of the women there is an insert image of a bottle of “Fine Old Kentucky Taylor Whiskey with what appear to be dice sups used in gambling.
Text at the top of the Tray reads “Wright & Taylor / Distillers, Louisville, Ky.”. and text on the raised rim at the bottom reads “Sole Owners, Old Charter Distillery. Reg. No. 266. / 5th Dist., Ky.”. At the left and right had sides of the Tray on the raised rim are the names of the brands of whiskey marketed by the Distillery - “Fine Old Ky. Taylor” and “Old Charter Whiskey”.
This outstanding, Pre-Prohibition Kentucky Distillery Advertising Whiskey Tray carries the mark of the manufacturer - Charles W. Shonk Company of Chicago, Illinois. The Chromolithography is of the VERY highest quality as would be expected from the outstanding craftsmen employed by this premier maker of tin lithographed advertising items.
This very beautiful, ca1905 Kentucky Distillery Advertising Serving Tray is not a reproduction, reissue or restrike but is an original ca1905 Serving Tray manufactured by Charles W. Shonk Co. for the Wright & Taylor Distillery to advertise their Whiskey.
This rare and wonderful, Pre-Prohibition Tin Lithograph Kentucky Whiskey Distillery Advertising Tray is in very good condition and displays nicely. The Chromolithography is bright and bold - rich and warm and very attractive. There is no significant surface nicking and no flaking or crazing to the surface but there is a line of surface scuffing that runs along the back of the Figure of the woman standing in the water as well as a few other small spots of surface scuffing at the top center of the image area. This scuffing does not penetrate the surface to the base metal but rather exposes the white undercoating of the lithographic surface. There is also some minor wear to the raised rim and a small spot of surface loss to the gold rolled rim at approx 5 o’clock. Even with these faults the Tray displays VERY nicely and will make an outstanding display piece. Please see the scans below for a good indication of the condition of this fantastic Louisville, Kentucky Distillery Tray!!
