1909 Maple City Emerald Pattern Signed Perf Cond An Amazing 33 Hobstars:
Everything about this bowl is unique and wonderful, and it really stands out from the pack. The unique character of this piece starts right at the very top -- the rim treatment is cut in pairs of high teeth with a deep channel separating each set -- it almost looks like a series of capital M letters marching around the perimeter. It's a singular treatment, not something usually seen in dentil rims.
Note that the price of the EMERALD bowl from the 1909 Maple City catalog is $11.70 -- TWICE that of every other bowl on the page. $11.70 in 2012 dollars is about $305.00!
The cutting is incredibly deep and sharp, as you can see in the pictures. One ABP expert I know describes this piece as "like slicing an orange in half and then turning it inside out with all the sections sticking up." There are four concentric circular miters girdling the bowl creating two circular chains of hobstars and a set of parallelograms filled with amazingly fine hob diamond. The cutting is so precise, and again, sooo deep. The polish is smooth and silvery.
There are an amazing 33 hobstars with hobstar centers on this bowl, and every one is set within a hexagon of tremendously deep miters. The floor of the bowl really pops with that large hexagon filled with six hobstars floating around yet another in the center. All that is framed by 12 parallelograms of hob diamond interspersed with triangles of super fine strawberry diamond. It's more than just a beautiful pattern--the prismatic display created by all those deep cuts is wonderful.
The 3 lb. 9 oz. blank is gorgeous -- heavy, colorless, brilliant and fiery. The bowl measures 8 1/4 x 3 1/4 " and is in perfect condition. There is a strong Maple Leaf logo signature in the center.
