1910 La Aqueduct: Owens Lake, Inyo Mojave Pictorial Route Map Hanging Medal Rare:
You are offerding on a VERY RARE & BELIEVE EARLY (LIKELY CIRCA 1908-1915 ERA) "ROUTE MAP" BRASS HANGING MEDAL which actually is self-identified as a"ROUTE OF LOS ANGELES AQUEDUCT", which pictorially depicts the route which starts at "OWENS LAKE, CALIFORNIA"and terminates in LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA.
This is AN AMAZING PC OF LOS ANGELES AQUEDUCT HISTORY.This controversial aqueduct began construction in 1908, headed by Los Angeles Dept of Water and Power (DWP)...under the supervision of chief engineer William MULHOLLAND. (i.e., Mulholland drive)....with the purpose of stripping the water from the beautiful Owens Valley located in Eastern Sierras, to satisfy the never ending demands of a growing and thirsty Los Angeles region. The aqueduct was completed in 1913....so I think this medal was likely issued in the 1908-1915 era.
You can read great history about this large arduous project...including attempts by locals in Inyo County at sabotaging the effort, and you can read about the "CALIFORNIA WATER WARS" colorful history...in many ways the pain still runs deep in the region. The aqueduct flows still today 100 years later...and of course the result is that beautiful Owens lake (NEAR LONE PINE, OLANCHA) (which used to have fruit orchards nearby) is now a dry dusty alkaline flat.....and towns like Keeler are l sparsely populated sites today. Ah yes....hip hip hooray for progress and modern man.
This is an AMAZING OLD PICTORIAL MAP of the "Los Angeles Aqueduct Route"....starting in Inyo County / HIghway 395 region of Owens Lake and Owens Valley, then shows route going through town of MOJAVE, and finally into Southern California.
This old hanging medal also has a great "EAGLE" topper, and looks like it was suspended by a chain. Also note maker marks "ROBBINS CO, ATTLEBORO MASS" east coast maker.
Aqueduct medal is brass, odd shaped, about 2 1/2" x 1 1/4" in size, and it displays very nicely.(please see pictures in gallery) This old medal was dug at one point, and has a little staining and lite pitting, but is fully readable, and might benefit from a gentle cleaning. Has maker marks on reverse.
Gallery pictures should give you all the information you need.
Amazing old 'LOS ANGELES AQUEDUCT ROUTE MAP" pictorial medal, once issued (likely 1908-1915) showing route of aqueduct starting at "OWENS LAKE" (INYO COUNTY)....running through "MOJAVE" CALIFORNIA, and terminating in LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA.
A terrific pc of southern california desert history.
