1911 Hess, Hessmobile Clockwork Flywheel Tin Racer For Sale
New Template
Toy Name:
Hess, Hessmobile Clockwork
Racer w/Original Driver & Mechanic
Year:
1911
Description:
One of the all time classic antique German transportation toys
is this early 20th century Hessmobile Racer. Produced by Matthias
(father) and Johann (son) Hess, Nuremberg, Germany. It was manufactured
in an era when auto racing meant including your mechanic as co-driver
due to the incessant vehicle break downs. It's engineering design
and appearance are still revered among collectors.
The toy is all tin litho and complete with both the original driver and
mechanic. Recently purchased from a New England collection the toy
grades at least Excellent. The inertia driven clockwork flywheel motor
works great. The car is all original and complete. Only the two flags
have been replaced.
The vehicle has a blocky rectangular design with an open air cockpit
and barrel-like seats. It adequately accommodates the two forward
hunched occupants. It's lithographed with a deep red polychrome finish
and has blue and
gold details. The edges of the interior compartment, front hood and
grille are brass finished. Patent information was
lithoed just below seats. The Hess trademark was included on both sides
of the rear quarter panels, as well as the formal Johann Hess trademark
above the rear bumper. "Hessmobile" was proudly lithoed near the top
front of the radiator.
The automobile is operated using the front crank to rev up the motor;
just like the actual car. Lifting the toy to wind it up automatically
disengages the motor.
However, once set onto a surface the entire transmission including the
steering wheel lowers by approximately 1". This engages the
now-spinning front flywheel axle and it races forward...which it really does!
Service of any of the engine components is easily accomplished by
lifting the front hood. Once completed it clips right back
into place. The underside of the hood is polished tin. The end facing
the firewall is brass finished.
There's not much more to say other than it's an awesome car which
seldom becomes available.....especially with both original occupants
and in such a high state of preservation. Beautiful early racer!
102 years ago you could've bought it for 57¢.
Size: 9". Excellent and without any repairs or touch-up. The red and
brass coloration has attained a fine patina over the years. It's never
been cleaned, or messed with. Not even the car wax mavens have
gotten to this beauty. The hood has a couple nicks on its exposed edges
and corners, there's an arch shaped scrape on the frame just behind the
front left tire, the driver and mechanic have some nicks and soiling
but the interior itself is fine, and of course the tire rims show wear
(however the center spokes and most of the sidewalls are spectacular).
It has a single narrow rust spot on the driver's side running board.
It's relegated only to the surface. Although it could easily be dealt
with if you
choose I recommend leaving it alone. It looks great the way it is. The
crank, clockwork gears, and flywheel mechanism work flawlessly. The
two replaced flags are included.
