1912 Maryland Porcelain License Plate - Md - Enamel - Nice For Sale
For sale is a great example of a 1912 Maryland passenger-issue license plate in blue-on-white porcelain. Porcelain license plates were used in MD through the 1914 issue. It has a relatively low number- #2604. In 1912, Maryland plates exceeded #10000. Has a good, clear maker's mark from the Baltimore Enamel and Novelty Company, a prolific supplier of porcelain license plates to many states. All four grommets in the corners are intact. The porcelain itself is beautiful and glossy front and back- pure white with deep blue numbers. See the pictures. As with most porcelains, it isn't perfect. There is some chipping around the upper right bolthole (see images.) There is also a tiny crack in the steel above the bolthole where the enamel is missing. The white mark cutting into the "2" in "1912" is not damage but a manufacturing defect, as are the two marks near the top of the "2" in the serial number. On the rear of the plate there is some chipping around the boltholes and very light surface rust on a chipped area. The small square marks on the back appear to be from the manufacturing process. For a hundred-year-old license plate, it looks very good.Overall, a beautiful license plate and an excellent addition to any license plate collection. An excellent opportunity to own an exemplary early porcelain plate. I personally think the royal-blue-on-white 1912 issue is the most attractive of Maryland's porcelain issues. I try very hard to describe my plates accurately as I am a bit of a perfectionist myself. If you have any questions about the plate please ask before offerding. Buyer to pay $12 for Priority Mail shipping (with delivery confirmation) in the United States. Sorry, no international buyers.
